When I was in Malawi, I came to a conclusion that as an outsider when you look at Malawians you might conclude that they are poverty stricken. This will probably be an outsider who is trying to measure the standard of living of Malawians from theirs. The outsider might be a victim of materialism, judging people .
Fortunately, my conclusion was that comparing where I come from with the communities around zomba and Mangochi, my village is probably poor. I reached this conclusion because I observed that Malawians are around those communities are very busy. They are engaged in farming activities, curious, charcoal making etc. I also saw a number of women and children picking strawberries on the side of the road and I thought between me and them, I am the poor one. I don't have access to fresh strawberries, I can't afford to buy them from shoprite or pick n'pay. This means that Woolworth is out of question.
The point I am making is that Malawians have access to free vegetables and fruits. My conclusion has also proven to be correct as it was reported that Malawi will donate maize to Swaziland, Lesotho and Zimbabwe (Sunday Times 26 August 2007).
